Թϱ LLC Fri, 22 Sep 2023 12:45:57 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.3 Imagine Learning Launches AI-Focused Venture Capital Fund /imagine-learning-launches-ai-focused-venture-capital-fund/ Wed, 23 Aug 2023 12:41:30 +0000 /?p=1438  is launching its own venture capital fund – and it’s all about AI.

The digital curriculum giant announced the rollout of , a new fund it plans to use to invest in emerging artificial intelligence-powered educational products.

The fund will be managed in-house, said Imagine Chairman and CEO Jonathan Grayer, and will be focused on supporting early-stage companies, largely through small, minority investments alongside other firms in seed and Series A rounds.

Imagine is particularly interested in fueling artificial intelligence tools that can improve student learning and outcomes, Grayer said in an interview. He also plans to use the fund to learn more about how AI is evolving to address educators’ needs in the classroom.

“We decided to launch this fund to invest in all kinds of artificial intelligence applications in education so that we would have front-row seats to the learning that’s going on, outside of what we do everyday to serve our teachers, students, and parents the best we can,” Grayer said.

The fund isn’t looking to support some of the more attention-grabbing generative AI applications that are on the market now, he said, as he doesn’t see them as driving the most important developments in K-12 education.

“What [AI] eventually is going to do is help teachers move students more quickly through their learning process by knowing, before they know, what they’re not learning, where the gaps are, and where the weaknesses are before they’re even demonstrated, because the machine can predict that,” he said.

Imagine wants to be a part of the process of developing those technologies, he said, and is also hoping to offer the organization as a resource for portfolio companies as they test out ideas and concepts.

Fund Looks to Make Long-Term Investments

At the same time, the company is still focused on developing its own AI-powered products in-house, such as a tutoring program that is designed to predict students’ questions and a writing coach to give feedback on things like grammar and sentence structure.

“These are the beginnings … but there are a lot more things that are being thought of [internally,]” Grayer said.

The company, formerly known as , reports serving more than 15 million students in 7,500 districts across all of its products and services, which include Edgenuity, Learn Zillion, and it’s namesake, Imagine Learning.

In the last few years, its added science, coding, and robotics to its offerings through a string of acquisitions and  focused on backing social-emotional learning.

The capital for the fund will come entirely from Imagine’s own coffers, which Grayer said have more than enough bandwidth to support the effort, especially as the company reports very low debt levels. There is no set limit to the fund.

“We have the capital to make as many of these investments as we can find that we think are worthy,” Grayer said.

That capital is also patient. Grayer said that Imagine’s financial situation helps it to give its portfolio companies time to grow and develop, which is key to building a “a good company that serves students and teachers well,” Grayer said.

Artificial intelligence technologies may take a longer time to get right for the K-12 space, he added, but “doing it right will lead to great benefits for teachers and students and shareholders of companies that do it.”

The announcement of the fund comes at a time when venture capital investments in the ed-tech space — which hit historic highs in in recent years — have slowed and begun to return to pre-pandemic levels.

Market intelligence firm in 2023, which is down from $10.6 billion in 2022 and a record $20.8 billion invested in 2021.

One of the few bright spots in the ed-tech venture capital ecosystem this year has been the growing interest in artificial intelligence-driven companies, seen in recent funding rounds like live language tutoring company  and .

Imagine Learning Announces Major New Special Education Initiative /imagine-learning-announces-major-new-special-education-initiative/ Thu, 09 Feb 2023 13:20:58 +0000 /?p=1436 Acquires Winsor Learning, Recognized Industry Leader in the Science of Reading

Launches Imagine AscendTM to Deliver Innovative Solutions for Millions of Students with Disabilities

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Imagine Learning, the largest provider of digital curriculum solutions in the United States serving 15 million students in more than half the districts nationwide, today announced a major new initiative to address the urgent learning needs of more than seven million students with disabilities across the U.S.

“This is a seminal moment for Imagine Learning as we commit significant time and resources to serve the needs of our most vulnerable students”

As part of the initiative, Imagine Learning has acquired Winsor Learning, a nationally recognized leader in intervention and supplemental literacy products that focus on teaching foundational reading skills grounded in the science of reading. The Winsor Learning leadership team is joining Imagine Learning. Terms were not disclosed.

Founded in 1997, Winsor offers a portfolio of products and services focused on literacy intervention for dyslexic and at-risk students using the Orton-Gillingham approach, as well as a supplemental whole-class literacy curriculum for grades K-5. Winsor’s innovative Sonday System® is a comprehensive line of structured literacy materials that enable multi-sensory reading instruction for Pre-K – 12 students and is used in approximately 4,000 school districts in all 50 states.

Imagine Learning is also launching Imagine AscendTM, a new comprehensive solution for special education students that combines digital courseware with highly qualified virtual instructors. Imagine Ascend provides districts with a sustainable solution for staffing shortages and a scalable approach to increasing graduation rates, both critical needs of special education programs. The Imagine Ascend portfolio of curricula and services will support learners with accommodating instruction and help educators serve students with disabilities.

“This is a seminal moment for Imagine Learning as we commit significant time and resources to serve the needs of our most vulnerable students,” said Jonathan Grayer, Chairman and CEO of Imagine Learning. “The acquisition of Winsor Learning, coupled with the launch of Imagine Ascend, establishes Imagine Learning at the forefront of innovative curriculum delivery for more than seven million students with disabilities. We’ve seen first-hand the impact of pandemic-driven learning loss and have heard directly from our education partners that they require specialized curriculum to address the needs of students with disabilities who have been disproportionately impacted. We take the responsibility to deliver interventions for these learners seriously and our commitment remains constant: to ignite learning breakthroughs, partner with schools and teachers, support families, and to deliver improved outcomes for every learner.”

Fifteen percent of students in U.S. public schools were served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in the 2020-2021 school year, up 13% over the last decade. These students’ disabling conditions impact their ability to learn, including speech and language impairment, specific learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and emotional or behavioral disorders, among others.

“The special education market today is severely fragmented, served by dozens of companies that fail to connect the dots and offer an integrated solution. Imagine Ascend curates the best available curriculum to create a platform of intervention solutions,” said Mr. Grayer.

The need for intervention and supplemental literacy tools for foundational reading skills is rapidly growing as schools seek to implement curriculum based on the science of reading. With pandemic-driven learning loss generating skyrocketing needs for effective reading interventions and states implementing new literacy and dyslexia legislation across the country, Winsor is poised for continued growth.

“We are especially excited to welcome the Winsor Learning team to Imagine Learning. Winsor will be a critical engine of growth for us as we build out our Imagine Ascend portfolio. We believe there is significant opportunity to expand Winsor’s product set across our footprint as we create digital supplements to complement their existing offerings,” concluded Mr. Grayer.

Amanda Burnette, CEO of Winsor Learning, said, “Winsor was created more than 25 years ago to offer students with reading challenges the tailored solutions they need to be successful learners. Today’s announcement is the next step in our history and will accelerate our commitment to serve more students all across the country. We are thrilled to join a team who shares our philosophy and has the incredible reputation and respect that Imagine Learning holds in the education space. We look forward to many more years serving the students, teachers, and school districts who need us most.”

Imagine Learning Launches Foundation Focused on Backing Social-Emotional Learning /imagine-learning-launches-foundation-focused-on-backing-social-emotional-learning/ Tue, 01 Mar 2022 13:20:19 +0000 /?p=1419  | Emma Kate Fittes

One of the largest digital curriculum providers in the country is launching a foundation with the goal of supporting social and emotional learning efforts happening outside of classrooms.

Imagine Learning announced today it will initially commit $5 million to launch the , with the aim of “fostering the well-being of learners and the people who support them.”

The foundation will begin by offering grant funding to community-based groups that offer SEL services to students outside of the school day. Those services could include anything from support groups to peer monitoring to after-school activities, said  Chairman and CEO Jonathan Grayer.

The mission is a direct response to the social and emotional impact of the pandemic, Grayer said, and the reality that schools are spread thin trying to address students’ non-academic needs. Long term, he said, expanding community supports could take some of the burden off of educators.

“Our goal was to find something that we could do, that we could have an immediate impact on, that wasn’t in curriculum,” Grayer said. “A big part of what we’re doing here is to enable local initiatives to have the resources they need to work.”

Separation & Oversight

Imagine Learning, formerly known as , reports serving more than 10 million students in 7,500 districts across all of its products and services, which include Edgenuity, Learn Zillion, and it’s namesake, Imagine Learning.

In the last eight months, the online curriculum provider, which started as the investment group in 2010,  to its product offerings by purchasing Twig Education and Robotify.

The foundation’s work will be completely separate from the company’s commercial business, Grayer said. The foundation is controlled by a separate board, whose chairman and president is the company’s general counsel, Chris Graham — a choice Grayer said was purposeful to ensure strict oversight.

Imagine Learning employees, who will in some cases choose grant recipients, are working as volunteers, he said.

While Imagine Learning does sell some online SEL curriculum to its district clients, it’s not a large part of the company’s business.

“This is not about our commercial well being, it’s about creating a healthier learning environment with healthier students and teachers,” Grayer said.

Over the past few years, social-emotional learning has emerged as a , and the appetite for programs and service has increased as students, families, and teachers have coped with stresses heaped on them by the pandemic.

Districts have collectively received billions of dollars in federal stimulus aid during the pandemic, and EdWeek Market Brief’s research has shown that  has been their number-one priority with that funding

“We’re just very excited about creating and enabling a laboratory of ideas and spreading it out across the country,” said Grayer, “and then being able to see what works.”

Imagine Learning Acquires Robotify, Innovative New Platform Designed To Teach Coding Through Virtual Robotics Simulation /imagine-learning-acquires-robotify-innovative-new-platform-designed-to-teach-coding-through-virtual-robotics-simulation/ Wed, 10 Nov 2021 21:10:26 +0000 /?p=1389 SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Nov. 10, 2021 — Imagine Learning, the leading provider of digital curriculum solutions in the U.S., today announced the acquisition of Robotify, a digital curriculum start-up with a mission to empower students to learn coding in an inspiring, engaging, and playful way. The Dublin, Ireland based company was founded by Adam Dalton and Evan Darcy, and offers a user-friendly curriculum aligned to CSTA and ISTE standards, with easy implementation and the resources schools need to help students develop computer science and coding skills.

The acquisition, the company’s first since being rebranded as Imagine Learning, reinforces the focus on its mission: to ignite learning breakthroughs and support each student’s unique learning journey.

“We are excited to welcome Robotify to the Imagine Learning family,” said Jonathan Grayer, Chairman and CEO of Imagine Learning. “Coding is the new literacy and Imagine Learning is a literacy leader. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) has become critical to prepare today’s learners for jobs of the future—with coding in particular quickly becoming a prerequisite. We also know that too many schools across the U.S. lack the resources to properly staff or equip a robotics program. Robotify solves this with a digital-first approach to provide greater opportunity to students by using virtual robots to make coding accessible to all. Driving equity is at the heart of our commitment to students, educators, and families, and this acquisition is a meaningful step for us.”

“As the barriers between core and supplemental curriculum blur, impacted by data-driven digital education and assessment, we believe that Robotify will become an important element of a K-12 education offering students valuable gamified science and coding content. Through the power of digital education, we are making learning more equitable, more collaborative and personalized, always advancing with students at the center,” said Grayer.

Robotify offers courses that include over 800 different coding activities and games, and even a multi-player platform that allows kids to showcase their coding skills in virtual robotics competition against teams worldwide. The platform offers 24/7 access to the most innovative robots, with no hardware purchase required, ever.

“When we founded Robotify, our mission was simple—to empower all kids to learn coding in an inspiring, engaging and playful way. We are proud of the phenomenal journey we have been on thanks to our incredible team, and this is only just the beginning,” said co-founder, Adam Dalton.  “Joining Imagine Learning helps bring us closer to our goal of making programming more accessible to young minds around the globe, and we’re elated to be part of the Imagine Learning family.”

The acquisition of Robotify, coming on the heels of the acquisition of Twig Education earlier this year, highlights Imagine Learning’s commitment to bring STEM forward in service of their mission, and prepare learners for the future.
